Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Coil DX54D+Z HC420LAD+Z HC420/780DPD+Z HC700/980DPD+Z Automotive HDG AHSS Steel
What’s Hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) Steel?
Hot-dipped galvanized steel (HDG / D+Z) is carbon steel coated with a uniform zinc layer via hot dipping process. The steel substrate is fully immersed in molten zinc at high temperature, forming a tight metallurgical bonded zinc coating. This barrier plus sacrificial anode protection blocks rust and corrosion effectively.
The coating is obtained by immersing pretreated steel strip into molten zinc on a hot-dip galvanizing production line. The zinc content in the molten zinc bath shall be no less than 99%.
Product Overview
This hot-dipped galvanized steel portfolio includes DX54D+Z Extra Deep-Drawing galvanized steel, HC420LAD+Z HSLA steel, HC420/780DPD+Z and HC700/980DPD+Z galvanized dual phase AHSS. Produced via hot dipping in ≥99% pure molten zinc, the tight zinc coating provides lasting anti-corrosion performance. Covering low-to ultra-high strength grades, our HDG steel meets all stamping, bending and welding requirements for home appliances, traditional passenger cars and new energy vehicle safety structures. Custom slitting, cutting and surface finishes are available upon request.

Choosing the Right Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Grade
The performance of hot dipped galvanized steel depends on both the base steel grade and the zinc coating specification. Solucky Steel offers grades ranging from deep drawing steel to advanced automotive galvanized steel for different automotive manufacturing requirements.
DX54D+Z is designed for components requiring good ductility and deep drawing performance. Its relatively low yield strength and high elongation make it suitable for complex stamped automotive sheet metal parts.
Typical applications include inner body panels, formed covers and other deep-drawn components.
HC420LAD+Z provides higher yield strength than conventional deep drawing grades while retaining forming capability for selected structural parts.
It is suitable for automotive brackets, reinforcements and structural supports where higher load-bearing performance is required.
HC420/780DPD+Z combines a tensile strength level of at least 780 MPa with the work-hardening behavior of dual phase steel.
It is relevant to body-in-white reinforcements, structural members and components requiring a balance of strength and formability.
HC700/980DPD+Z provides a tensile strength level of at least 980 MPa for demanding automotive structural applications.
It can be evaluated for reinforced body structures and crash management components where high strength is required. Forming limits, springback, tooling and welding parameters must be considered during component development.
| Grade | Main Advantage | Typical Component Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| DX54D+Z | Deep drawing formability | Complex stamped body panels |
| HC420LAD+Z | High yield strength | Brackets and structural supports |
| HC420/780DPD+Z | Strength and work hardening | Body reinforcements |
| HC700/980DPD+Z | Ultra-high tensile strength | High-strength safety structures |
The final grade should be selected according to required mechanical properties, component geometry, coating specification and manufacturing process.
Zinc Coating Weight: Z60, Z100 and Z140
Zinc coating weight is an important specification when purchasing hot dipped galvanized steel coil. It affects the amount of zinc available for corrosion protection and must be selected according to the component's service environment and manufacturing requirements.
Under EN 10346 coating designations, the Z value represents the nominal coating mass designation expressed in grams per square meter for both surfaces combined.
| Zinc Coating | Coating Mass Designation | Selection Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Z60 | 60 g/m² | Lower coating mass for applications with suitable additional corrosion protection |
| Z100 | 100 g/m² | An intermediate coating option for specified corrosion and processing requirements |
| Z140 | 140 g/m² | Higher zinc coating mass where additional corrosion protection is needed |
Under comparable exposure conditions, a greater zinc coating mass generally provides a larger zinc reserve for corrosion protection.
However, coating selection should also account for surface treatment, paint systems, forming operations and the final operating environment.
For automotive applications, the required coating weight and surface quality should follow the component specification or vehicle manufacturer's material requirements.
Solucky Steel can review the requested zinc coating designation together with the steel grade, dimensions and intended application.
Automotive Applications of Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Coil
Hot dipped galvanized steel is used in automotive components where corrosion resistance, strength and forming performance must be considered together. The appropriate grade depends on the structural function and manufacturing process.
Deep drawing galvanized steel such as DX54D+Z is suitable for formed automotive body panels and sheet metal components requiring good ductility.
The zinc coating provides corrosion protection, while the base steel supports stamping and forming operations.
HC420LAD+Z offers increased yield strength for brackets, supporting members and selected structural reinforcements.
Its combination of strength and zinc coating makes it relevant to components requiring both load-bearing performance and corrosion protection.
Galvanized dual phase steel such as HC420/780DPD+Z can be used in selected body-in-white structures where tensile strength and work-hardening performance are important.
Applications include reinforcement members and stamped structural parts designed for higher mechanical loads.
HC700/980DPD+Z provides a high tensile strength level for structural reinforcement and crash management applications.
These applications require engineering evaluation of formability, springback, welding performance and crash behavior before material approval.
