What’s Hot Rolled Pickled Steel?
Hot Rolled Pickled & Oiled Steel (abbreviated as HRPO, also called hot rolled pickled steel) is hot-rolled steel strip/sheet that undergoes an extra acid pickling process after hot rolling.
Production Process
Hot rolling: Cast slab is heated and rolled into target thickness at high temperature; a thick layer of iron oxide scale (mill scale) forms on the surface.
Pickling: Immerse the hot rolled coil in hydrochloric acid solution to fully dissolve and remove all black oxide scale.
Rinsing & anti-rust oil coating: Clean residual acid on the surface, then coat uniform anti-rust oil to prevent rust during storage and transportation.

Product Overview
Hot Rolled Pickled High-Strength Structural Steel S550MC, S600MC, S650MC and S700MC. This series of steel conforms to EN 10149-2. It is high-strength hot rolled steel produced via thermomechanical rolling, specially designed for cold forming. The regular supply form is hot rolled pickled and oiled (HRPO) coils or sheets. The numerical value in each grade denotes the minimum upper yield strength of the steel, while "MC" represents the thermomechanical rolling process, making the steel suitable for complex cold stamping and forming operations.

S550MC, S600MC, S650MC and S700MC belong to the same family of high yield strength steels for cold forming. The main difference is their specified strength level, which affects material selection for structural loading, weight reduction and forming operations.
| Steel Grade | Minimum Yield Strength* | Material Selection |
|---|---|---|
| S550MC | 550 MPa | High-strength stamped brackets and structural supports |
| S600MC | 600 MPa | Structural parts requiring increased yield strength |
| S650MC | 650 MPa | Chassis components, cross members and reinforced structures |
| S700MC | 700 MPa | High-load structural parts and weight-optimized designs |
*Minimum yield strength values are nominal grade designations; applicable values depend on material thickness and the relevant standard.
S550MC and S600MC are suitable starting points for components requiring higher strength than conventional structural steels while maintaining practical cold-forming characteristics.
S650MC is appropriate for demanding structural applications where increased yield strength is required, including selected commercial vehicle chassis components.
S700MC offers a higher strength level for weight-sensitive structural designs. Forming radius, edge quality, welding procedures and material thickness must be considered during component development.
The highest-strength grade is not automatically the best choice. Material selection should be based on component loads, forming geometry, fabrication methods and the specified mechanical properties.
Automotive Applications of High Strength Hot Rolled Pickled Steel
High strength hot rolled pickled steel is used in automotive components that require structural strength, dimensional consistency and reliable forming performance.
S550MC–S700MC steel grades provide material options for automotive chassis brackets, frame reinforcements and cross members.
Their high yield strength supports the design of structural components under significant mechanical loading, particularly in commercial vehicles and heavy-duty transportation applications.
Selected high-strength grades can be used for seat support brackets, structural reinforcements and other stamped seat components.
Material selection depends on the required thickness, forming geometry, joint design and load-bearing performance.
These pickled and oiled steel steels are suitable for formed and welded brackets used in automotive and transportation assemblies.
The pickled surface provides a cleaner starting condition for cutting and fabrication compared with unpickled hot rolled material.
High-strength thermomechanically rolled steel is also used in truck frames, cross members, support structures and fabricated parts requiring improved strength-to-weight performance.
S650MC and S700MC are particularly relevant to structural designs where reducing component weight is an important engineering objective.
Both materials originate from the hot rolling process, but pickled steel undergoes an additional surface treatment to remove mill scale.
| Property | Hot Rolled Pickled Steel | Regular Hot Rolled Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Condition | Mill scale removed | Mill scale generally remains |
| Surface Appearance | Cleaner, more uniform | Dark oxide surface |
| Further Processing | Suitable for stamping, cutting and fabrication | Surface cleaning may be required |
| Corrosion Protection | Temporary protection from anti-rust oil when oiled | Depends on storage and surface treatment |
| Typical Supply Forms | Coil, sheet, slit strip | Coil, sheet, plate |
Pickling improves surface cleanliness but does not increase the base steel's mechanical strength or provide permanent corrosion protection.
For automotive parts requiring a clean surface before forming, welding or additional finishing, pickled and oiled steel offers a practical material option.
