BMW Body-in-White Material Grade Distribution and Component Application

Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) has defined specific requirements for steels used in its vehicles. These requirements have been standardized in the company’s own GS 93032 standard. It ensures that the materials used meet the highest quality standards and are optimally adapted to the production processes and functional requirements in automotive engineering. BMW divides its steel specifications into different categories, each covering different applications and requirements. The following sections provide a detailed overview of the individual standards and the associated steel grades.

BMW Body-in-White Material Grade Distribution and Component Application

Bake-Hardened Steel

HC180BD

HC180YD

HX180BD

Application: Outer door panels, hood outer panels and trunk lid outer panels (exterior body panels).

Functions: These materials deliver outstanding formability. Hardness rises further during paint-baking after stamping to achieve high dent resistance. They are applied for visible outer body panels.

Deep drawing cold-rolled steel + Hot-dip galvanized deep drawing steel

DC01

DC04

DX54D

DX56D

Application: The top cover outer panel, the exterior covering parts of the vehicle body, and the complex-shaped outer panel components

Functions: Ultra-deep drawing performance, suitable for forming complex curved surfaces, with the highest surface quality grade, ensuring the aesthetic appearance of the paint surface; DX54D/DX56D are galvanized versions with rust prevention function

Bake-Hardened Steel

HC220BD

HC220YD

HX220BD

Application: Door inner panel, cabin internal support plate, wheel well inner panel, floor auxiliary reinforcement plate

Functions: Medium strength, balancing both stamping formability and structural stiffness, used for the inner layer of car doors and non-appearance interior body panels; stronger than 180BD

Baked-hardening steel, solid-solution steel without voids IF, multiphase steel

HC300BD

HC306LAD

HC300XD

Application: Floor cross members, inner rocker panels, inner reinforcement plates for A-pillars and B-pillars, inner roof supports.

Functions: It belongs to high-strength steel of 300-MPa grade with balanced weldability and fatigue resistance. Used as fundamental body-structure parts to bear basic loads. HC300XD is a multiphase-steel variant falling within the above-mentioned multiphase-steel category above 300 N/mm².

Micro-alloyed high-strength steel LA steel

HC380LAD

Application: Longitudinal body stiffeners, cabin internal auxiliary reinforcements.

Functions: This is fine-grained high-strength steel with outstanding weldability. It improves overall cabin rigidity and supports lightweight design, raising body-structure stiffness with minimum weight gain.

Multiphase steel (with DP duplex steel as the main type)

HC400T

HC400TD

HC420LAD

Application: Main bodies of A-pillars, B-pillars and C-pillars, main rocker beams, door impact beams (core safety zone)

Functions: These parts adopt ultra-high-strength dual-phase (DP) steel with high tensile strength. The material absorbs impact energy during collisions to protect occupants. It falls under multiphase steels with tensile strength well above 300 MPa.

Ultra-high strength multiphase steel

HC600C

HD680C

Application: B pillar reinforcement core, threshold reinforcement core, roof impact protection component (highest safety level area)

Functions: Ultra-high-strength steel, with tensile strength approaching 1000 MPa, the core safety component of the vehicle body, capable of withstanding side impacts, the core material for BMW's passive safety system
