Graded Multi-material Body-in-White Solution: Material Layout Analysis of BYD Vehicle Structure
Hot-Formed Steel (Purple)
Material Features: Manufactured via hot stamping and die quenching. Its tensile strength reaches 1300–1500 MPa with ultra-high deformation resistance. It delivers superior forming accuracy and is ideal for complex closed structural components.
Application Locations: A-pillar, B-pillar, rocker reinforcement, roof side rail, door ring frame, center tunnel and other core occupant cabin frameworks.
Core Function: Restrains cabin deformation and resists intrusion during frontal and side impacts to preserve survival space for passengers. It serves as the most critical material for vehicle passive safety.
Commonly Used Domestic Grades (Mainstream for BYD Supply Chain): B1500HS / BR1500HS (Baosteel), PHS1500 (Shougang / HBIS)
Overseas Equivalent Grade: GMW15192M – Usibor 1500P
AHSS | Advanced High Strength Steel (Pink)
Material characteristics: Includes duplex steel DP, heat-treated hardened BH, and multiphase CP steel; offers both high strength and excellent elongation, balancing energy absorption and structural rigidity, suitable for complex curved surface stamping.
Application locations: B-pillar reinforcement plates, door impact reinforcement components, floor transverse reinforcement beams, upper longitudinal beams, wheel well reinforcement components.
Common domestic grades: HC550/980DP, HC420/780DP, B180H2 (heat-treated hardened steel)
Compared with GMW standard: CR420Y780T-DP, CR180B2
HSS | High Strength Steel (Blue)
Material Characteristics: Medium strength, excellent formability, moderate cost, suitable for large-area panels and ordinary structural components.
Application Locations: Vehicle floor, door inner panel, rear wheel cover, rear side panel inner panel, ordinary beam support components.
Common Domestic Brands: HC340LA, HC380LA, SPFH590
Benchmarking against GMW: CR340LA, CR380LA
Mild Steel | Low-carbon Soft Steel (Light Blue)
Material Characteristics: Excellent deep drawing performance, good plasticity, lowest cost; relatively low strength, not capable of bearing the main collision loads.
Application Areas: Exterior body panels, fenders, roof covers, rear door inner panels, etc. for appearance stamping parts.
Common Grades: DC04, DC06; GMW grades CR4, CR5
Aluminum | Aluminum Alloy (Green)
Material Characteristics: Significantly enhanced lightweight advantage, with a density only 1/3 that of steel, and excellent energy absorption properties.
Application Locations: Front impact beam (the green component at the front end in the figure), some battery pack supports.
Common Grades: 5754, 6061, 6016 automotive body aluminum sheets
R.Plastic | Modified Engineering Plastic (Yellow Reinforced Plastic)
Material Characteristics: Lightweight, high degree of design freedom, corrosion-resistant; does not withstand high-intensity impact loads.
Application Locations: Front bumper frame, radiator support frame.
